Doubt

Is it alright that I have doubt? As I began pursuit of my PhD in African American Studies from Temple University. I must be truthful about the doubt that circles this choice to pursue more education when American society seems to be filled with over-educated individuals with questions but no answers. As society continues to spiral towards an uncertain future and the problems seem larger by the day I am left to wonder really is more school the answer. It seems that higher education is where revolutionaries go to die. To become a part of the very system that we seek to change. This is contradictory but in reality American society creates limited free space for those that recognize that the cries and the silent suffering of the masses is to much to take and desire to do something. They are left to attain more degrees so that the legitimate concerns that arise very early can become legitimized and we can receive compensation. However, what compensation is worth witnessing the daily suffering of those that are left isolated and locked out and cannot gain access to the American dream?

  1. As you already mentioned, America is a contradiction. This is another extension of that. While it may seem backwards that you have to become a part of the system that you want to change, isn't the best way to fight (the system) to learn how to be more effective in doing so?
Some are given the opportunity to succeed at this level, but few possess the motivation. Fewer still possess the natural talent and ability to lead. Those of us who have met you know that you possess all of these. I think many of us know that you will succeed in making changes.
One thing to think about: Is it a bad thing to strive for change AND to be compensated for it? What you do with that compensation could be used to help others too.

  2. True you make very good points. It is just the reality that we must become a part of the system. It is just the constant reminder that there is not this clear cut picture of right and wrong or opression and righteousness. We must simply be diligent in are desire to be the best when can. Also, the idea of compensation is neccesary it is just at times guilt follows because u don't want to forget were you come from or you feel guilty for making it out and believing that getting out will dilute your passion or tame your voice. The struggles continues but I thank you for you input and i hope that we can continue to trade ideas
